I lashed my valves today. I used a barring tool, also known as an engine rotating tool, to turn my 4BT.
It plugs into a hole in the front of the flywheel and engages the teeth on the flywheel. The picture that came with the tool shows the use of a 3/8" ratchet connected directly to the tool.
In my F150, everything, including the brake master cylinder, is in the way.
I installed the tool from under the truck and used a swivel joint and some extensions.
And turned the engine over from the front of the engine - where I could see the timing mark.
NOTES:
1. The ball joint tool is used to pry the barring tool out of the hole.
2. Put the transmission in neutral before using the barring tool. :emb: I managed to "rotate" the engine enough to climb a tire up a chock.
